Job Summary:

The Neuro Intensivist Advanced Practitioner Provider (APP) is a certified, licensed nurse practitioner or physician assistant who independently and collaboratively works with the multidisciplinary team to provide comprehensive care to acutely ill and/or medically complex patients in the neuro-intensive care unit. Our multidisciplinary team includes dedicated EEG services, inpatient neurology consultants, dedicated fellowship trained neuro-intensivist physicians who work closely with neurosurgery and neuro-interventional teams.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Demonstrates knowledge of etiologies, risk factors, pathophysiology, and presentation of acute neurological medical emergencies, e.g., acute stroke, subarachnoid hemorrhage, status epilepticus, intracranial hemorrhage.
  • Demonstrates and uses critical thinking skills to synthesize and analyze patient data.
  • Performs a comprehensive or problem-focused history and physical assessment for critically ill adult patients that is accurate and complete.
  • Orders, collects, and correctly interprets and evaluates laboratory, imaging and other diagnostic tests to assess patient problems and health care needs.
  • Prescribes and manages pharmacologic agents and/or other treatment modalities with attention to efficacy and safety.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in procedural skills, e.g., intubation, central line placement, arterial line placement, lumbar puncture, intraventricular medication administration, extraventricular drain manipulation.
  • Strong working knowledge of neurocritical care medicine, e.g., fluid resuscitation, vasopressors, hemodynamic monitoring, and mechanical ventilation.
  • Formulates and implements comprehensive outcomes-based treatment plans using the patient assessment, evidence-based medicine, standards of care, professional practice guidelines, and in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, when appropriate.
  • Evaluates patient responsiveness to treatment therapies and adjusts the treatment plan, as indicated.
  • Initiates timely consultation and referral, including with the collaborating physician, based on the needs of the patient.
  • Facilitates and maintains ongoing communication with the patient, family, and/or health care team members.
  • Counsels and educates patients and families regarding medical processes and treatment.
  • Maintains accurate, complete, and timely documentation in the electronic medical record.

Job Details:

  • Day Shift
  • Some weekend coverage required
  • some on call shifts required

Job Requirements:

  • Must be a board certified and licensed Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, or Physician Assistant/Associate.
  • Must have National Provider Identifier (NPI), or obtain NPI, prior to employment start date and meet current Medicare requirements for billing.
  • Must hold current DEA Registration with schedules 2, 2N, 3, 3N, 4, and 5 and State issued prescribing authority.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Emergency
    Neurological Life Support (ENLS).
  • Preferred experience of working at least one (1) year in the neuro-critical care setting as a NP or PA or neuro ICU experience as a RN.
