Our 2020 Philanthropy Grant goes with love to Children’s Medical. In this, let’s call it atypical year, NTNP had no grant applications but thanks to your good work we did have money dedicated to Philanthropy. Chidimma Nguma (Philanthropy Committee) found a wealth of giving opportunity for us on the Children’s Medical web site. This led to contact with Ms. Lauren Yamaoka, Development Officer for Children’s who took us on a tour of all the philanthropic services Children’s offers. These are wonderful loving things that are essential to a child’s life and recovery but not covered by insurance or even direct billing. Children’s is already doing these things but now we can be a part of this wonderful work. The 2020 Grant will be divided among timely needs at Children’s.

  • One third ($2000) will go towards supplementing the additional PPE needed to protect staff, patients and their families. This is the Children’s Health COVID-19 Response Fund.
  • One third ($2000) will become a part of Children’s Health Indigent Family Assistance Fund. This fund provides financial support for qualified families to obtain necessities, such as meals, clothing, transportation, convenient lodging, car seats, and medical supplies, while their children are in care. Professional social workers administer the fund and provide counseling, support and material help as needed.
  • The final third ($2000) will help children’s patients be actual children despite whatever illness or condition. The Children’s Child Life Fund provides means for normalizing the child’s experience. Child life specialists may distract with play, role play procedures, provide developmentally appropriate toys and help a child and their family to relax. This fund sustains diagnostically centered summer camps such as Camp Moss (cardiology) and Camp Esperanza for children with cancer.

Ms. Yamaoka explains that Philanthropy is so critical to the many important funds at Children’s because there is no other external revenue source of support. Philanthropic contributions thus ensure that these enhancing services remain widely available for children and their families at no charge to them. Contributions can help provide supplies, technology, camp experiences, toys and games, as well as salary support for the special dedicated Child Life employees. NTNP thanks Ms. Yamaoka and our own Chidimma Nguma for finding us this opportunity to help.

Children’s web site offers a number of ideas for persons to help directly. Right now for example one can purchase a BOO Halloween yard sign for $20. A great donation and a lot easier than hanging witches in your yard! Attached you can find a detailed discussion offered by Ms. Yamaoka of the myriad complementary services Children’s offers patients and their families. Take a peek,  you may find something you wish to do or to support.
